Composed by the poet Sri Venkatadhvari (c. 1630), the Venkateswara Suprabhatam is a collection of verses meant to wake the Lord Venkateswara (a form of Vishnu) at the Tirumala Temple. The very first word, "Suprabhatam" (अति सुप्रभातम्), means “Auspicious Dawn.”
In the mid-20th century, M.S. recorded the Suprabhatam with pristine, unadorned classical Carnatic purity. Her version—accompanied only by the drone of a tambura and subtle rhythmic cues—captures the serene stillness of dawn.
The name M.S. Subbulakshmi (1916–2004) is inseparable from the Suprabhatam in the minds of millions. While the Suprabhatam is an ancient Sanskrit hymn, it was M.S.’s divine voice that transformed it into a daily morning ritual for households worldwide.
