When the quiz papers came back a week later, Lia didn't get an A. She got a C+. But next to her answer, Cikgu Fatihah had drawn a small smiley face.

Her problem wasn't understanding the soalan (questions). Her problem was that her best friend, Lia, had stopped speaking to her.

Aina stared at the whiteboard. Mr. Rahman had just written a complex redox reaction for their Kimia Tingkatan 4 class. To everyone else, it was a terrifying jungle of ions and oxidation numbers. But to Aina, it was a puzzle.

Lia took the notebook. She tore the jawapan sheet into tiny pieces. Then, for the first time in a week, she laughed.
