Mara looked at the file again. At the very bottom, under "Status," there was one final line she hadn’t noticed:

She clicked on the file’s properties. Last modified: three days before Elaine’s heart attack.

Her stomach lurched. She searched "Linda Park." A devout woman running the St. Jude’s food bank. Last week, "Linda" had personally messaged a single mother offering a holiday hamper. The single mother had replied with crying emojis and prayers. Mara looked at the file again

Mara’s hands went cold. She recognized only the first one—her mother’s real account, which she had memorialized two months ago. The rest were strangers. Or rather, strangers wearing her mother’s writing style.

With shaking fingers, Mara opened her own Facebook account. She searched for "Jenny Reynolds." A profile popped up—a cheerful woman in her sixties, smiling in front of a rose garden. The cover photo was a quote about grandchildren. The account had 234 friends. It posted every Tuesday and Friday: recipes, weather complaints, nostalgic photos of 1980s high schools.
