Directed by Géla Babluani (a remake of his own 2005 French-Georgian film 13 Tzameti ), this movie strips away Statham’s usual wisecracking, suit-wearing persona and drops him—and the audience—into a suffocating world of desperate men and deadly gambling. It is not a typical "Statham vehicle," and that is precisely what makes it fascinating. The film does not open with Statham. Instead, it introduces Sam Riley as Vince Ferro , a down-on-his-luck young electrician whose family is drowning in medical debt. When his wealthy, drug-addicted employer dies, Vince overhears a secret: a letter containing instructions to a high-stakes, illegal gambling ring. Desperate, Vince steals the letter and assumes the dead man’s identity.
He travels to a remote, gothic estate, expecting a simple card game. Instead, he finds "The Game": a barbaric Russian roulette tournament where wealthy spectators bet fortunes on the lives of desperate men who pull triggers for a chance to win a life-changing sum of money.
